In their traditions they tell that during a time when a smallpox epidemic was decimating the population of the Tsáchilas, a witch-doctor spoke with spirits to ask their advice on how to cure the sick of the epidemic; the spirit guided them to an achiote bush and instigated them to completely cover their bodies with the juice of the pods of the fruit. After several days the fatal cases decreased dramatically. They consider themselves forever indebted to the spirit of that plant for the protection against smallpox it gave them. They were known as Achutines. They speak the Tsafiqui language, which means “true word”.
